Yungblud - Live Review

Yungblud / Eden Project Sessions / 10th June 2023

What an unbelievable setting for a live music event! The Eden Project in St Austell Cornwall is a haven for geographer, gardener & flora fan alike. But today! The Eden Project Yungblud Session was in play.

After a mosey around the biomes (which was a nice bonus included in the ticket) we headed to the theatre space, as we arrived so did the eerie fog; really setting the scene for us misfits, oddballs and goths to convene.

Crawlers opened up the event, with a solid set that the crowd seemed familiar with. After being on the scene for a while now, Crawlers have amassed quite a supportive fanbase, especially after having a couple of songs recently going “viral”. Crawlers job tonight was to warm up the crowd - and they did exactly that. Their set was lively, finessed and powerful, big things to come from this distinctive four piece.

Yungblud has become somewhat of an enigma. He’s a target of a great amount of love and hate, support and critique, devotion and repulsion. You could almost group him with Marmite; as in, you love or hate him, but we don’t actually think that’s true. No matter what you think of some of his opinions, there’s probably at least one song in his catalogue that everyone could appreciate. From Grandparent to Baby, from Bricky to Dancer, from Politician to Garbage Collectors. There’s gotta be one track that you can bob your head to. And objectively, concerning his performance? Yungblud is exceptional, distinguished. We talk a lot about “star quality” - this intangible thing that some performers, some people, just have. Well, Yungblud has that. His presence is magnetic, he is magic on stage. And that’s not luck, it’s not training and it’s not “performance”, it’s just talent.
Yungblud’s talent is also rife, belting out his songs to perfection as he runs, bounces, kicks and jumps his way from side to side to side of stage like a yoyo.

The most astounding thing at this show that we noticed was the smiles, the joy. The breadth of people at this show was so wide, people from all walks of life. People were dancing, screaming, running, laughing, socialising. We saw children of all ages, absolutely absorbed by the show, loving and living every second of it. In the age of social media and technology, it was really something to feel present at an event and have everyone around you be fully there too.
