New Record - You Me At Six with ‘Night People’

It’s an interesting thing to watch the lifespan of a band, the peaks and troughs as the musical collaboration create or find their niche, start to build popularity and work their way up from the small capacity venues to touring arenas. On this subject, especially within the Rock genre some can be guilty of judging such success harshly. Such things as playing to bigger crowds, and altering your musical output can be viewed as “selling out”. Because being in a band is about the music and not being financially beneficial, band life is strife and that’s what makes it authentic. Right?

No! Although it can be argued that some bands may become slightly hypocritical and do an about-face, this is not the case here, with You Me At Six. Starting out in 2004, and releasing their first album in 2008, these scruffy young lads from Surrey hit with a new type of raw British Rock, it was honest and humorous, heartfelt yet spunky. Having hit their stride early on in their career, it only makes sense that this youthful edge would dissipate, as these lads grew into themselves and with this newly gained and increasing life experience the next few albums; ‘Hold Me Down’, ‘Sinners Never Sleep’ and ‘Cavalier Youth’ each took strides towards a more polished, mature and Rock sound - leaning slightly away from their original Punk roots.

On the 6th January 2017, we will see the next chapter of the YMAS story unfold, as new album ‘Night People’ hits both digital and physical record shelves worldwide.

With every You Me album the reoccurring theme is emotion. Every song makes you feel something, whether that be happy and motivated, thoughtful and quiet or lucky, the songs and albums carry the listener along on a journey.

As mentioned previously, these guys have chosen to lean more towards Rock n Roll than their original origin of Punk, but this has happened so gradually, subtly and appeasingly that without properly thinking into it you wouldn’t really notice. It’s just You Me At Six, and they have a sound that is all their own. The tracks are now more vocally lead as opposed to guitar, which also gives the record a Pop edge. Appreciated on a wide scale on genres You Me At Six have found a loop hole, of being a Rock band that bridge the gap, perhaps You Me At Six are the UK’s equivalent to the likes of Green Day, they will be our gateway band to aspiring Rock fans, leading them away from mainstream music towards the more hardcore tunes.

Half of the tracks on ‘Night People’ err on the side of ballads, not so much love songs, but slower paced and lyrically poignant songs. Beauts of note would have to be Brand New and Give. These songs particularly made us sit and listen.
And on the other side, the flat out smashers particularly worthy of a mention are Can’t Hold Back and Swear, making us want to jump up, get out there and do something.

Inoffensive and landing on happy ears, there are few that would not appreciate You Me At Six make a damn fine record.
