Liverpool experimental alt-pop trio REAL TERMS are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Cacophony’ which is released on 25th January 2023. The track is the latest to be taken from their debut album, VANTAGE, which will be released on 24th February 2023 via renowned math-rock band Delta Sleep’s new label, Sofa Boy Records.

Like a pessimistic teenage cousin of Jimmy Eat World’s ‘A Praise Chorus’—a song which is itself a nod to all the music that inspired it—‘Cacophony’ is a song about opportunity, but instead of looking ahead at those you might encounter in the future, you’re looking back at those you’ve spurned in the past. “The crushing realisation of all those times you looked for help from others, not realising that they were the times you were supposed to be working harder to help yourself,” elaborates vocalist/bassist John Crawford, “a tree can’t grow leaves for any other.”

The “face glowing in multicolour” is that of Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus, whose performance in Liverpool way back in 2011 changed absolutely everything for Crawford, musically speaking, as he explains “I’ve been turning to their creative power and clarity for inspiration ever since. I always thought Jim Adkins was talking about Davey von Bohlen in similar terms.” “Instrumentally this is one of the songs on the album that made me realise we were re-connecting with our identity as a band, in the sense that where there was space to be filled, we did it by playing harder and singing louder, the idea being to add more power where previously we’d added more layers. The closing riff is one of my favourite bits in our live set.”

Produced and mixed by David Berger (Outfit) at The Consulate in Liverpool, forthcoming debut album VANTAGE was mastered by Stephen Kerrison at Tall Trees in Liverpool, with original artwork by Simon Job and friend of the band Paul Rafferty, of Hot Club De Paris fame. Previous singles ‘Frantically Wrong’ and ‘Veil Is Thinner’ received support from PROG Magazine, John Kennedy on the Radio X Xposure show, Birthday Cake For Breakfast, Dusty Organ, The Progressive Journal and more. Fresh from shows alongside Tricot, Radiant Heart, 55 Deltic, and Chew Magna, the band recently announced a run of Feb/Mar 2023 UK headline dates with tickets on sale now.
