Yungblud - Live Review

YUNGBLUD /BIRMINGHAM O2 ACADEMY / 15TH OCTOBER 2021

What exactly is “fitting in”…? Who decided what the definition of what “in” is…?

At this Yungblud show, it felt like we were properly part of the “out” crowd- amongst the misfits & those who were told they weren’t “normal” and it felt super cool, free and safe to be in that space; to be whoever you are and however you want to be. Yungblud has created a fan base and a subculture of acceptance where anyone can paint their nails, dye their hair or wear a fucking dress

The media would perhaps say that this crowd was “woke” but one thing is for sure, they were awake! 20 mins before Yungblud was due on stage the crowd were screaming at the sound and lighting checks- chanting his name and even including a game of oggie, oggie, oggie! It was so refreshing to be around this pure joy and excitement! Shows with an older crowd can seem so quiet, grumpy and even judgemental- as we stand with arms folded looking at our watches waiting for the band to grace the stage, non of that here, this crowd were dressed to the nines and sure to enjoy every single second of their night out out with Yungblud.

When the curtain dropped and Yungblud hit the stage, the crowd were at fever pitch and the young Doncaster man played on this perfectly. He paces his performances to perfection, not many would have the confidence to walk on stage and then stand still and wait, what felt like a good couple of minutes, before playing the first song. Building the suspense and atmosphere into a near frenzy!

If Elvis was punk rock - that would be Yungblud! A cross between the Joker and Vivian from the Young One’s - that would be Yungblud! Charisma oozes off his performance! A touching moment during his second song of the night, when the sheer magnitude of the crowd signing along seemed to hit Mr Blud with a moment of “what the fuck” - a realisation of the obsessed and committed fanbase he’s created.

This show was truly moving. This young guy flying his flag high and proud, and encouraging others to do the same is so fucking powerful. As great as records are, an album can lose something, the full feeling of a song - the guts of it, that a live show hits you with in force, and the way live music hits differently is you can FEEL it. The true sound of an artist is found in the live show, and Yungblud put on one crazy, amazing show. Absolutely enthralling and captivating for every single second he was on stage.

If Punk Music is freedom, of being the true unique entity that is YOU in your entirety, Yungblud is the most authentic Punk you’ll ever hear. We are honestly taken a-back by how good this show was, we are new and proud obsessed Yungblud fans.
