Yungblud - Album Review

ALBUM REVIEW- YUNGBLUD SELF TITLED RELEASE

So it seems like it takes two years to make a killer record… Out with his third album today is pop-punks favourite Yungblud.

YB founded his “community” fanbase in 2018 with debut album 21st Century Liability, and followed that up with 2020’s Weird!

It’s no secret that we here at Hush are big Yungblud fans…but it happened upon chance. After being emailed about his tour we checked out his socials, and from the perspective of a photographer, his aesthetic - and the team behind it - were so inspiring, we needed to check this kid out. Honestly we went in thinking he was a rapper and had never listened to a note of a song! Boy were we surprised when this punk show exploded in front of our eyes- the warmth, of a fun, fully encompassing and welcoming rebellion.

Yungblud is BIZARRE. We call him “pop-punk” but that’s a really shit definition. Generally, it suggests pop tunes with a very minimal guitar lead edge - which to be fair, some of Yungblud’s tracks are. But he isn’t just that. The Yungblud sound is oddly versatile, across his breadth of records & features on other artists songs, you’d struggle to find a genre that isn’t touched or implied.

This new record Yungblud, perfectly fits into this genre-less box. Each track standing alone yet shoulder to shoulder with the tracks placed either side. Yes - it’s typical Yungblud in that it’s explosive alternative guitar based tunes, with raw & thought-provoking lyrics, but it’s deep and it’s resonating. Yungblud is first and foremost a poet, his lyrics are meaningful and that’s why he has such impact and connection with his fans, in this climate of bigotry, racism, ableism and sexism, it’s nice to listen to someone that gets it and is so upfront about societies resistance and his personal experience.

33 minutes for 12 songs, this record is a quick smack in the face, break of your heart and it’s over. The winner of favourite track for us (today at least…) is “The Boy In The Black Dress”, as it’s catchy as hell, sounds beautiful and dreamy and really speaks the Yungblud message in volume.

Speaking about the record, Yungblud has said the song “Funeral” cemented the sound and feeling of the album, it’s about how he’s moving forward and not looking back. At the time he felt down and insecure, this song and album was created to inspire and give power to the listener.

Yungblud is like Marmite! People either LOVE him or HATE him! If you’re not able to say something nice, don’t say anything at all has always been our mantra… If you can’t appreciate Yungblud for what he is, just take his music at face value and you can’t ignore that this is some catchy, fun shit. The only negative we can possibly think of is this; what does the future hold for Yungblud? The message is very of the moment, as culture & society changes, how will Yungblud stay relevant? We’re excited to watch the answer unfold…

Yungblud is doing a small room tour in October, and we’re gonna be there, we cannot wait, following that he’s hitting arenas all around the world! Grab tickets now if it’s not already too late.
