Live Review - You Me At Six

You Me At Six @ Rock City, Nottingham 13/10/16

Just because they can sell tickets for an arena show, doesn’t mean a band should put on an arena show. There is just a certain atmosphere that a venue like Rock City brings, it wouldn’t be Frank Turner’s favorite venue without good reason. You Me At Six have played arenas with the likes of All Time Low in the past, but the current tour ahead of the release of new album ‘Night People’ sees the band return to venues like the aforementioned Rock City.

Opening up the show are a band who optimize why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, walking out looking like one of the “of the moment bands” whom are currently churning out mediocre Indie music, VANT actually turn out to be a band fully equipped to “hang” with You Me At Six. They aren’t the kind of band you’d expect to have been supporting You Me At Six five or so years ago, but they are the band that certainly deserve to be supporting them now. A tour like this is a gift for any band, but VANT clearly set out not to rest on their laurels, they made sure that they were coming away with as many new fans as possible. They smashed their set, and started the night out with a real impact.

As previously said, some bands even though they can do arena shows just shouldn’t. By bringing everything down a little smaller, a little tighter, it created an infections and almost riotous environment. How can a sold out Rock City make more noise than a substantially filled NIA? Who knows but it totally happened! Tonight was painfully loud. You can’t argue that You Me At Six are possibly the closest thing we have to proper Rock superstars in the UK, so it is nice to get the chance to enjoy them in an “intimate” setting before the tour moves back in to the arenas. You very rarely get a “moment” with bigger more established bands, because they seemingly stop trying and just function on autopilot, but it is a pleasant surprise to see that You Me At Six are still actually giving a shit!
