The Quireboys - Live Review

The Quireboys @ The Venue, Derby 14/09/17

Once again we are back at The Venue in Derby, last time we were here we may have said it was quickly becoming one of our favourite live music venues, tonight continues that attitude, we’re well looked after and The Venue is becoming a little bit of a home from home. Brett James and the team here are doing a fantastic job of bringing live music, old and new to the city of Derby… Tonight Derby have responded favourably and come out in force to see rock legends The Quireboys.

The crowd here tonight is a testament to the staying power of a band that has managed to not change much over the years, a band that are obviously comfortable both in their style and attitude. The Quireboys have an air of regalia that is rarely seen in todays bands, front man Spike struts and sways, swinging his microphone stand above the crowd and commanding a willing audience.

Playing music that spans nearly 3 decades The Quireboys have a seamless sound, hits from their debut album ‘A Bit Of What You Fancy’ float effortlessly into music from their latest album ‘Twisted Love’. Obviously hits like Hey you and There She Goes Again are always going to remain fan favourites, but the new songs are well received by the Derby crowd.

The great thing about The Quireboys is you don’t necessarily get what’s on the tin, you could potentially peg them as cheap and cheerful cock-rockers from a bygone age; this is definitely not the case, The Quireboys have a real and gritty quality that many of the other bands of this era didn’t, rather than focusing on the more glam aspect (which their appearance may lead you to believe). The Quireboys drenched themselves in the blues, this has become even more authentic and enjoyable as the band have gotten older.

After a few line-up changes over the years The Quireboys really seem to have now settled into a solid lineup, they are obviously having fun and playing music they enjoy to a crowd that is ready to lap it up.

Long may they continue.
