Sea Girls - Live Review

SEA GIRLS / ROCK CITY, NOTTINGHAM / 17TH NOVEMBER 2022

With latest album ‘Homesick’ hitting number three in the UK music charts, London based indie rockers Sea Girls are currently out on tour supporting the release. We hit Nottingham’s infamous Rock City, for their sold out show - including the balcony - this isn’t commonplace at RC, so it shows the impact & support that Sea Girls have.

The show, as is sometimes the case in Nottingham on weeknights, was an early doors kinda deal, so sadly we missed the support act, but as we’re aging gig-goers an early closing show is a real bonus ! As we entered the venue, we noticed the downstairs bar had Sea Girls laden signage, “Wellness Area”, the band thought it important that there be a space for people that needed a moment of calm amongst their storm, which we totally appreciate, as we’re sure did many others.

As well as this, the band or venue - we’re not sure - had posters up all around making it clear that this was to be a safe show for women, the band later reiterating this, with a speech about this being a place to feel happy, confident and safe; and that anyone not following the rules would be swiftly removed from the show and police intervention would be involved.

So anyway, this show, as much as the politics and ethics are a huge part of this band, the current movement and society right now - is actually about the music! Did we say how full this venue was?! Filled with people of all different ilk’s, there was no “genre look”, it was a wonderful, vast and colourful mix of people, all come together because they loved this band. The love in the room was truly tangible, as everyone stood in place early anticipating the bands arrival .

Sea Girls are on the softer side of rock music compared to our other tastes, but their sound is warm, comforting and beautiful whilst fun and energetic too. The sound at Rock City on this night was absolute perfection. It sounded like a radio quality, recorded studio session. There is no doubt that Sea Girls are truly talented and honed musicians. We were fans before we saw them live, and we’ve come away flabbergasted by their talent and by their heart.

One to see live if you ever get a chance, for some reason, a live show can make you a fan unlike anything recorded can, and then you hear the recordings with that live feeling and it’s truly magic.

Check out the Sea Girls whenever and however you can.
