OVERCOATS RELEASE NEW SONGHORSEGIRL

Overcoats share their new single “Horsegirl”, out now via the band’s new label, Never Fall Back Records and distributed by Thirty Tigers. Produced and co-written with Day Wave, the lilting, dreamy “Horsegirl” finds Overcoats crafting a hypnotic, hum-in-the-sun pop song. The eagerly awaited new song is the band’s first new material since the 2021 EP Used To Be Scared Of The Dark. The video for “Horsegirl” shows the duo Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell in the lush fields of Amy Grant’s Tennessee farm doing a single take sing-a-long, wearing prairie inspired vintage dresses from Nashville’s Starstruck Vintage. The surrealist video features them on a bed in the middle of the field.

The band says “Horsegirl” captures the paradox of longing for connection while yearning to be free. “It’s about that feeling of wanting to wander instead of being tied down or tamed,” says Elion. “But the point is that we’re not horse girls—we’re the horse itself.”

Recorded in Los Angeles with Day Wave (aka Jackson Phillips) along with additional production from Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves, Lissie, Demi Lovato) in Nashville, “Horsegirl” suggests a more country-tinged direction for the shapeshifting duo. Since their last full LP The Fight, for which Elion and Mitchell shaved their heads and adopted a more punk rock aesthetic, they have grown their hair back and re-embraced a softer look and sound. “Horsegirl” comes on the heels of Overcoats’ contribution to the Bandcamp only fundraising compilation Liberate Abortion, released last month. Helping to raise money and awareness for reproductive rights found Overcoats delivering the fuzzy, rollicking, previously unreleased song “Clingy” next to over 50 artists including Pearl Jam, Wet Leg, Maya Hawke, Fleet Foxes, Amanda Shire and Jason Isbell, and Cat Power.
