CLEAN CUT KID / NEW VIDEO ‘LEWIS, BE BRAVE’

 Liverpool quartet CLEAN CUT KID are pleased to reveal another heartwarming official video for their new single ‘Lewis, Be Brave’ which is out now via Alcopop! Records. The band’s fourth album Hiss is set for release in Spring 2022 on new independent label homes Alcopop! Records (UK/EU) and Team Love Records (US), with the album’s lead single ‘Heavy As’ released earlier this summer. Shot and edited by the band, the video stars their friend John Paul Taylor who loves to perform Makaton—a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. Makaton supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression. 

Commenting on the ethos behind the videos for the singles for the new album, frontman Mike Halls says: “The music of HISS is an instant snapshot of where I was while creating the record. It’s just me, alone in a tiny studio, plugged straight into a tape machine. Carrying that feeling over to the videos for each single was simple: shoot something that’s emotionally moving me in the moment, on film, and just capture as much of the ‘present’ as possible. In taking this approach to creating art, writing and producing the record becomes the important part; not where those songs go afterwards.” 

“‘Living through’ shooting the videos becomes the point of making them; not some cheap piece of content for promotional purposes. If your band photo is you looking cool in some studio somewhere, the only thing that photo REALLY captures is vanity, hot uncomfortable lighting and overthought style-by-committee. HISS is the opposite of that. It’s a pulled veil on the infinite beauty of everything you’ve mistaken for ‘normal’.” Another beautiful slice of lo-fi indie folk from the four piece, the single gives a further insight into the sound, atmosphere, and songwriting that fans can expect from the new album, and is a touching tribute to the grief experienced during parental loss. Recorded and produced entirely by the band in their top of the range, custom-built analogue home studio in their Liverpool flat, forthcoming album Hiss was painstakingly and lovingly crafted by the band, who reveal themselves as true audiophiles and songwriters of the highest calibre in the process. Commenting on the single itself, Halls says: “A good friend came to stay with us a few days after losing his Mum. I’d never witnessed someone so completely and utterly consumed by grief. His pain was like a force that changed the air in every room he was in. ‘Lewis, Be Brave’ was written simply to tell him, ‘I tried my very best to understand what you were feeling.’” 

Winter 2021 UK headline tour dates are on sale now (see below for listings), with support from Team Love labelmate and New York-based songwriter Lorkin O’Reilly.
