Live Review - CKY

CKY and Graveyard Johnnys @ O2 Academy, Birmingham 13/05/17

When a gig is announced for one venue, and is then upgraded to the venues bigger room then you know you are possibly in for something very special, especially when you are rolling back the years and reliving the early 2000’s, a time when everyone teenager was watching MTV and the likes of Jackass and Dirty Sanchez, the latter of which soundtracked by Bam Margera’s big brothers band CKY. Well CKY are back, and selling out their original venue as they head to the Midlands.

Graveyard Johnnys are a band full of energy, and who doesn’t appreciate a little stand-up bass. The Welsh trio, are clearly relishing supporting a band like CKY and the opportunities that it allows, taking the chance to find new fans and send people home remembering Graveyard Johnnys. Every genre comes back around, perhaps it is time for 50s style rockabilly to have its day again, with Graveyard Johnnys leading the way.

The Bam Margera and Jackass link, is something that I’m sure CKY are keen to try and shake-off, after all “who came first”, CKY obviously. Obviously the crowd are lapping up the classic hits from albums like ‘Volume 1’ and ‘Infiltrate.Destroy.Rebuild’ and even the handful of new tracks which get played, a risky move for any band. The bands issues have been well documented, but it seems as though as a band CKY are now in a good place, touring and recording for the love of the music, this is a band who have passed that pressured period. Time will tell how the band will develop as a trio, but it is pretty clear that this Chad Ginsburg fronted CKY is one that is here to be built on.

If you are keen to delve back into the world of CKY, their new album ‘The Phoenix’ is out June 16th via your normal means of music consumption.
