Brighton’s BEACHTAPE Return With New Single ‘Speakn’ Released via CRC Records

Brighton, UK indie-rock band Beachtape are delighted to announce their return with new single ‘Speakn’ set for release on 10th May 2022 via CRC Records. The single is the first new music from the band since 2020, following on from the release of their critically-acclaimed Bigger Picture EP via what marbles?, and is accompanied by a trippy VHS video showcasing the band in their element performing live. A commentary on the strain and distance that the pandemic has put on personal relationships over the past two years, it’s an accomplished return to form that echoes the likes of Elliott Smith, Pavement, Rivers Cuomo’s solo material and Pixies. Commenting on the track, vocalist Rory Sear said: “I remember writing this song on New Years eve—I think that inspired the ‘there’s always next year’ line. I guess I was looking back at 2020 and thinking about moving forward, feeling confused at the distance put between friends and family and the strains it had on those relationships. “We recorded it in early 2021 when we tracked what would become our album. It’s the first time we’ve tried using a synth in a track too,” continues Sear of the influences behind the track. “I think I was probably listening to too much Grandaddy at the time…”

The project of Rory Sear (vocals/guitars), Robbie Carman (guitar), Leo Kenyon (drums) and Andy Kemp (bass), Beachtape made their debut in 2017 with their Hold Music EP, followed by a double A-sided 7” Fix It Up / Figure It Out (2018). Their subsequent 2019 single ‘Somebody Like Hugh’ (CRC Records) built upon their previous releases with their melodic yet fuzzy take on indie rock. The band have so far won a host of fans at The Independent, DIY, Clash Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, Consequence and more, boasting over 1 million streams across DSPs and international radio support from BBC introducing, Amazing Radio, KEXP, KCRW and more. Live shows with YOWL., Bloody Knees and Egyptian Blue have helped bolster their reputation as a live act to be savoured, and pre-pandemic the band were hotly tipped for festival season and scheduled to appear at SXSW, Live At Leeds, The Great Escape, 2000 Trees, Reading & Leeds and more.
