Turbowolf - Live Review

Turbowolf, Vodun and YOUYESYOU @ The Sugarmill, Stoke 26/10/17

Here we are. In Stoke. Lots can be said for Stoke and it’s never usually good BUT I can honestly say we had a really good night, the people of Stoke opened their arms to embrace your hard working Hush gig reviewers. The Sugarmill is a great little venue, wrapped in the backstreets of the town centre it has a great vibe and seems to be catering for all kinds of shows from independent artists to more recognisable acts.

YOUYESYOU

YOUYESYOU are a sound to be reckoned with; loud, raw and aggressive. Unfortunately most of the crowd look to be in the pub next door and YOUYESYOU don’t have nearly the audience they deserve. Not phased by the volume of the crowd the frontman got up, close and personal, screaming into the faces, and releasing the demons (?!) of crowd members.

Hopefully we’ll be able to catch these guys at another show soon.

Vodun

Before Vodun take to the stage you know that you are preparing for something a little bit different; with African inspired hangings draped over the amps, monitors and mic stands before they take to the stage it was already visually amazing.

My problem here is trying to write down what Vodun sound like… and that is near impossible, it’s an explosion of sounds ranging from tribal to heavy metal, Vodun can not be boxed in or pinned down. Soaring vocals gracefully slide over pounding rhythms which in turn provide the backbone for heavy melodic guitars all performed by musicians who are not only super talented but also incredibly passionate about the music they are performing.  So rewarding to see a band do something different. The music industry is so saturated with bands that nothing is able to massively deviate from the path, Vodun created their own path.

Turbowolf

Onwards to tonight’s main event, Turbowolf! Turbowolf have an ever increasing fan base of loyal fans who have come to love and appreciate this bands quirky, stylistic and eclectic mix. The band perform like it could be their last ever gig, putting heart and soul into each note and beat. There is something incredibly British about Turbowolf, it’s not something that is quite tangible, it’s not something that you can put your finger on… it’s, like, well… it’s like you could imagine these guys being equally as comfortable having a cup of tea at your Nans house, as they are screaming and roaring on stage !

Performing in such a unique, colourful and mesmerising way, the crowd were captivated, similar to Vodun before them, Turbowolf have a Turbowolf-ness that is unparalleled, they have formed their own style, sound and package, and that they deliver with panache.

Turbowolf deserve big things, they’re clearly making music that they love, not music to appease the masses. Live Turbowolf are tight, passionate, and clever, they really are a band that you need to go and see live.
