Franz Ferdinand - Live Review

Franz Ferdinand & Albert Hammond Jnr @ Rock City, Nottingham 14/02/18

Night three of our Rock City extravaganza! Another packed room welcomes in our first and only opening act of the night, Albert Hammond Jnr. You might recognise Albert as the convulsing guitarist from The Strokes, who has been doing his own thing for quite some time now, but this is the first time he’s bought his new flavour to our shores. With new album ‘Francis Trouble’ out any day now, Albert had tunes old and new to treat the eager crowd too. His performance felt authentic and his presence on the stage created the feeling of the elusive “moment”, he didn’t perform (or talk) to the crowd, but with this guy that was charming and felt really real. He was just here to blast his tunes and have a good time with his band. He’s serious about his music and that is startlingly clear. You can hear slight styling essences coming through similar to The Strokes, but the most part this is a whole different bag. Albert has created a funky and fresh take on the indie, rock and alternative genres.

Franz Ferdinand are back on the road after a little time off, and the departure of a founding member. Since this time and re-jig, the guys appear to have refocused themselves, moving forward with their style from the original guitar-driven indie anthems to synth-heavy disco rock, the new album is a welcome back to Franz Ferdinand with open arms. The band obviously treated the crowd to lots of older tunes as well as bringing the new, and they ate every second up, biggest track of the night had to be Take Me Out, we’re such creatures of habit. Here’s hoping fans will embrace the new stuff and this is a new start for FF. From here the guys head off into the depths of Europe for shows in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Space AND France! Bon Voyage! Catch them where you can.
